hurricane anita 1977

Just outside of Houston, Texas. 1977. Anita Bryant is making her way across the United States in order to raise funds for her crusade, just as the encroaching, and aptly named, Hurricane Anita, is making its way across the lower part of the United States. Meanwhile, Gary Wayne has promised his girlfriend LauraLynn and her parents a private audience with Mrs. Bryant, in order for them to start their own chapter of SAVE THE CHILDREN, Mrs. Bryant’s campaign to stop the militant homosexuals. But when Gary Wayne’s lover, Bucky, shows up with overstuffed suitcases and anti-Bryant protest signs, Gary Wayne’s plan starts to unravel. The growing storm outside doesn’t help any, as it has everyone scared. LauraLynn is scared she’ll be an old maid at twenty-one. Bucky is scared he’ll never know true love. And Gary Wayne is scared that Anita Bryant might be right after all. Through mistaken identities, lies, and perhaps the revealing of a little skin, HURRICANE ANITA 1977 shows how messy things get when we live our lives through fear.
